EVOLVEVISUAL IDENTITYEVOLVE is a visual identity concept for a two-day music festival at Randall’s Island, New York. I developed the identity around four continuous lines, connecting the festival’s posters, digital platforms, merchandise, and on-site graphics. The result combines an expressive visual system with a consistent approach to presenting artists, schedules, and stage information.THE CHALLENGE The project began with a practical question: how can a festival identity remain recognizable across different formats while accommodating changing lineups and information? My design objective was to create a flexible system that could support both promotional graphics and the practical needs of navigating a festival.VISUAL IDENTITYI built the identity around four continuous lines, each representing a festival stage. Different sections of a shared drawing create individual compositions, allowing the graphics to change without losing their connection. Across neighboring posters, the lines continue from one frame to the next, bringing the separate pieces together as one image. DESIGN SYSTEMI developed a shared set of colors, typography, and graphic rules to keep the identity consistent across formats. Electric blue, off-white, and black provide the main backgrounds, while red, pink, green, and yellow identify the four stages. Archivo establishes the typographic hierarchy, while IBM Plex Mono supports dates, times, and supporting details. The EVOLVE wordmark combines pixelated and smooth letterforms, introducing a transition that carries into motion.CAMPAIGN APPLICATIONSI extended the system across posters, billboards, and street banners, adjusting the composition and amount of information for each format. Large typography prioritizes dates and headliners, while supporting details follow a consistent hierarchy. Cropping the shared line drawing creates variation across the campaign while maintaining a recognizable identity.WAYFINDING & STAGE GRAPHICSI extended the four stage colors into the festival map, directional signage, and stage screens, giving each stage a consistent visual cue. The map introduces the routes, signs pair stage names with directions and walking times, and screens highlight upcoming performances. Together, these applications bring the identity into the experience of moving through the festival.MOTION DESIGNI developed the motion concept around the behavior of the lines and the changing resolution of the wordmark. Lines draw across the frame to reveal information, while the logo transitions from pixelated to smooth. These behaviors connect lineup announcements, social formats, and stage graphics through a consistent approach to movement.WEBSITE & APPI extended the identity into a proposed festival website and companion app, focusing on the lineup, schedules, stage information, and tickets. Stage colors connect the digital experience to the map and on-site graphics. Typography and layout prioritize practical information, while the linework maintains continuity with the wider campaign.MERCHANDISE & TICKETSI applied the system to clothing, tickets, and wristbands, exploring how the identity could work on physical objects. Different crops of the linework and variations of the wordmark give each piece its own composition. The proposed merchandise releases capture different stages of the logo’s evolution, connecting the objects to the festival countdown.REFLECTIONDeveloping EVOLVE beyond the initial posters made me think more carefully about how a visual identity behaves across different scales and uses. Connecting the linework to stage information gave the graphics a practical role alongside their visual character.
The next step is to refine legibility across print and digital formats and test whether the stage colors, names, and directional cues are easy to follow. Those observations would guide revisions to the map, signage, and supporting text.
